AEO for ChatGPT Search: what is different from Google
ChatGPT Search uses the Bing index for candidate sourcing and OpenAI's own ranking layer for citation selection. About 80% of the AEO signals that matter for Google AI Overview also work for ChatGPT Search, but 20% are Bing-specific. Most teams over-index on Google-shaped signals and underweight the Bing-shaped ones.
How ChatGPT Search picks sources
ChatGPT Search has two layers:
- Candidate sourcing. OpenAI queries the Bing search index for relevant pages. If you are not indexed by Bing, you cannot be cited by ChatGPT Search. Period.
- Citation ranking. OpenAI applies its own ranking layer over the Bing candidates, weighted by signals that overlap heavily with Google AEO but diverge in specifics.
Practical implication: optimize for Bing crawlability first, then layer ChatGPT-specific signals on top. Most teams skip step 1 because Google ranks them already, then wonder why ChatGPT Search does not cite them.
The 80% that matches Google AEO
Same as AI Overview optimization:
- Direct answer in first 80 words
- FAQPage and HowTo schema
- Article schema with Person author
- Internal linking and topical authority clusters
- External corroboration (backlinks, brand mentions)
- Entity recognition (Wikidata, Crunchbase)
- Clean URL structure
If you have done the AEO foundation, you already cover this.
The 20% that is Bing-specific
Where to diverge from a Google-only AEO playbook:
- Bing Webmaster Tools URL submission. Bing accepts up to 10,000 URLs per day via API and exposes coverage data Google does not. Use it.
- IndexNow integration. Bing co-owns IndexNow with Yandex. Push every published article via IndexNow within seconds of publish. ChatGPT Search picks up the change within hours instead of waiting for Bing's regular re-crawl.
- Cleaner HTML. Bingbot is more sensitive to heavy JavaScript than Googlebot. If your important content is rendered client-side, Bing may not see it and ChatGPT Search may not cite it.
- Social signals. Bing weights Facebook, LinkedIn, and X signals more than Google. Post important pages to those platforms.
- Explicit named-author authority. OpenAI's ranking layer over-weights named-author credibility. Person author schema is a stronger signal for ChatGPT Search than for Google AI Overview.
OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User
Two OpenAI crawlers matter for ChatGPT Search:
- OAI-SearchBot — the main crawler for ChatGPT Search results. Allow in robots.txt.
- ChatGPT-User — fetches a URL when a ChatGPT user clicks or pastes a link. Allow in robots.txt.
Both should be allowed for full AEO coverage. Blocking either reduces ChatGPT Search citation eligibility. (See our open robots.txt at /robots.txt for the current policy.)
Measuring ChatGPT Search citations
Tracking ChatGPT Search visibility:
- Manual queries. Run 30 category-relevant queries in ChatGPT with Search enabled. Note when your brand is cited. Run monthly.
- Referral traffic. GA4 exploration filtered for referrer chat.openai.com captures click-through from cited links.
- Paid tools. Profound, Otterly, and Brandwatch all now track ChatGPT Search citations as of 2026.
Most B2B brands see ChatGPT Search referral traffic at 0.5-2% of Google organic in 2026, with much higher conversion rates. Expect this share to grow.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a separate Bing Webmaster Tools account?
Yes if you want concrete ChatGPT Search visibility data. Free, takes 15 minutes to set up, gives you URL submission, coverage reports, and search performance for the Bing index — which is what ChatGPT Search reads from.
Does my robots.txt need to specifically allow OAI-SearchBot?
Implicitly yes (via User-agent: * Allow: /) is enough, but explicit `User-agent: OAI-SearchBot Allow: /` is the recommended signal that you intentionally want ChatGPT Search to fetch you. Our robots.txt does both.
Will optimizing for ChatGPT Search hurt my Google rankings?
No. 80% of signals overlap. The remaining 20% (cleaner HTML, social posts, IndexNow) are also positive or neutral for Google. There is no trade-off.
How fast can ChatGPT Search index a new article?
Via IndexNow: 6-24 hours typically. Via natural Bing re-crawl: 3-14 days. The IndexNow path is the reason we automate IndexNow submission on every push.
