  • Direct-answer paragraphs. Same as other AI surfaces — first paragraph carries disproportionate citation weight.
  • Structured data. Article, FAQPage, HowTo schemas all signal extractability.
  • Internal linking density. Strong topical clusters get cited together.
  • Domain authority. Perplexity uses traditional DA as one signal but weights named-author signal higher than Google does.

The freshness lever

For B2B brands, Perplexity optimization rewards a consistent publication cadence on your priority topics. Practical implications:

  • 2-4 new articles per month per topical cluster keeps the cluster "fresh" in Perplexity's logic.
  • Update existing high-value articles every 6-12 months. Changing the dateModified field in Article schema (and the visible date) refreshes citation eligibility.
